Before he became a renowned Iditarod Musher or even a Colonel, Norman Vaughn was a member of Admiral Byrd’s expedition to the South Pole in 1928.
This tale comes from that era!
Alaska has a very unique history when it comes to the arts and music. Case in point, an Alaskan big band ensemble that appeared in Washington’s first World’s Fair in 1909. Hence this tale!

It means something extra when Kim Carlson has attendst he annual Polar Bear Jump Off in Seward, AK, as she has done for ten years—raising tens of thousands of dollars. She has dedicated her jumps, first to her mother, who was lost to cancer, and subsequently to other victims and their families.
